Safe Travel
Parts of Miami proper, including Little Haiti and nightlife hotspots such as Overtown (just
north of Downtown), experience high crime rates. You should be careful in these areas, and
as a rule of thumb, avoid hanging out too much in Downtown after dark. Miami Beach on
the other hand is safe from a crime perspective, although drunk driving seems depressingly
common.
For emergency assistance, such as police, ambulance or firefighters, call 911. This is a
free call from any phone.
Hurricanes
Florida hurricane season extends from June through November, but the peak is September
and October. Relatively speaking, very few Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico storms be-
come hurricanes, and fewer still are accurate enough to hit Florida, but the devastation they
wreak when they do can be enormous. Travelers should take all hurricane alerts, warnings
and evacuation orders seriously.
Hurricanes are generally sighted well in advance, allowing time to prepare. When a hur-
ricane threatens, listen to radio and TV news reports.
