Photography
All camera supplies (digital memory, camera batteries) are readily available in local drug-
stores, which also usually provide inexpensive printing from your memory card (including
one-hour service) and burning photo CDs and DVDs.
When photographing people, politeness is usually all that's needed (though street per-
formers appreciate a tip).
For a primer on taking good shots, consult Lonely Planet's Travel Photography .
Post
The US Postal Service (USPS; % 800-275-8777; www.usps.com ) is reliable and inexpensive.
For 1st-class mail sent and delivered within the USA, postage rates are 44¢ for letters up to
1oz (20¢ for each additional ounce) and 29¢ for standard-size postcards. International air-
mail rates for postcards and letters up to 1oz are 80¢ to Canada and Mexico, and 98¢ to
other countries.
You can have mail sent to you c/o General Delivery at most big post offices (it's usually
held for 30 days). Most hotels will also hold mail for incoming guests.
Public Holidays
On the following national public holidays, banks, schools and government offices (including
post offices) are closed, and transportation, museums and other services operate on a
Sunday schedule. Many stores, however, maintain regular business hours. Holidays falling
on a weekend are usually observed the following Monday.
New Year's Day January 1
Martin Luther King Jr Day Third Monday in January
Presidents Day Third Monday in February
