more than 200,000 homeless, and causing about $15.5 billion in damage.
1999
On Thanksgiving, five-year-old Elián González is rescued at sea, his Cuban mother
having died en route. Despite wild protests by Miami's Cuban exiles, the US returns
the then seven-year-old Elián to his father in Cuba.
2000
The Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP) is put into action. The
