GAY & LESBIAN KEY WEST
Key West's position at the edge of the USA has always attracted artists and eccentrics,
and with them a refreshing dose of tolerance. The island had one of the earliest 'out' com-
munities in the USA, and though less true than in the past, visiting Key West is still a rite
of passage for many LGBT Americans. In turn, this community has had a major impact on
the local culture. Just as there is a straight trolley tour, you can hop aboard the Gay &
Lesbian Trolley Tour of Key West ( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; % 305-294-4603; tour $25), depart-
ing from the corner of South St and Simonton St at 11am on Saturday. The tour provides
commentary on local gay lore and businesses (you'll also see the site of the infamous
Monster club). It's organized by the Key West Business Guild, which represents many
gay-owned businesses; the guild is housed at the Gay & Lesbian Community Center (

free internet on one of the few computers, plus pick up loads of information about local

Gay nightlife, in many cases, blends into mainstream nightlife, with everybody kind of
going everywhere these days. But the backbone of the gay bar scene can be found in a
pair of cruisey watering holes that sit across the street from one another, Bourbon St

karaoke night. For a peppier scene that includes dancing and occasional drag shows, men
