Boating and fishing are naturally very popular and often go hand in hand, but to do either
you'll need to get some paperwork in order. Boaters will want to get tide charts from the
park (or from www.nps.gov/bisc/planyourvisit/tide-predictions.htm ) . And make sure you
comply with local slow-speed zones, designed to protect the endangered manatee.
The slow zones currently extend 1000ft out from the mainland, from Black Point south
to Turkey Point, and include the marinas at Black Point and Homestead Bayfront Parks.
Another slow zone extends from Sands Cut to Coon Point; maps of all of the above can be
obtained from rangers, and are needed for navigation purposes in any case.
Although Biscayne is a national park, it is governed by state law when it comes to fish-
ing, so if you want to cast a line, you'll need a state license. These come in varieties many
and sundry, all of which can be looked up at http://myfwc.com/fishing, which also
provides a list of places where licenses can be obtained. At the time of writing, nonresident
seven-day saltwater and freshwater fishing permits cost $50 each.
For information on boat tours and rental, contact Biscayne Underwater
( www.biscayneunderwater.com ), which can help arrange logistics.
The water around Convoy Point is regarded as prime windsurfing territory. Windsurfers
may want to contact outfits in Miami

Primitive camping on Elliott and Boca Chita Keys costs $15 per tent, per night; you pay
on a trust system with exact change on the harbor (rangers cruise the Keys to check your
receipt). Bring all supplies, including water, and carry everything out. There's no water on
Boca Chita, only saltwater toilets, and since it has a deeper port, it tends to attract bigger
(and louder) boats (and boaters). Bring your own water to both islands; while there is pot-
able water on Elliot Key, it's best to be prepared. It costs $20 to moor your boat overnight
at Elliott or Boca Chita harbors, but that fee covers the use of one campsite for up to six
people and two tents.
