In-Depth Information
(238 Mamie St, Chokoloskee; mains $5-16; h 11am-3pm late Oct-May)
Just a mile or so past the edge of town, this awesome cafe-cum-art-gallery sits in a restored
1890 general store. It's outfitted with bright retro furniture and piles of kitschy books, pot-
tery, clothing and maps (all for sale). But the best part is the food (lunch only) - fresh crab
cakes, salads, fish platters and veggie wraps, made with locally grown organic vegetables.
Triad Seafood Cafe SEAFOOD
( % 239-695-0722; 401 School Dr; mains $9-16; h 10:30am-6pm Sun-Thu, to 7pm Fri & Sat)
Triad is famous for its all-you-can-eat stone crab legs, but they serve up all kinds of sea-
food gleaned from the swamp and the sea (well, the Gulf of Mexico). Should you impress
the friendly owners with your ability to devour arthropod legs, you get the dubious honor
of having your picture hung on the Glutton Board.
Oyster House SEAFOOD
(on Chokoloskee Causeway; mains $8-22; h 10am-11pm)
Besides serving the Everglades staples of excellent fried seafood and burgers, Oyster
House has a friendly bar with a screened-in porch where you can drink, slap mosquitoes
and have a chat with friendly local boozehounds.
Seafood Depot SEAFOOD
(102 Collier Ave; mains $6-20; h 10:30am-9pm)
Don't totally sublimate your desire for fried food, because the gator tail and frogs legs here
offer an excellent way to honor the inhabitants of the Everglades: douse them in Tabasco
and devour them.
Camellia Street Grill
SEAFOOD
( % 239-695-2003; 202 Camellia St; mains $10-20; h noon-9pm Sun-Thu, to 10pm Fri & Sat)
Camellia is as fancy as Everglades City gets, although even then it's easily accessible and
down to earth. The food is inspired by both the American South and the Mediterranean;
grouper, for example, is seared with caramelized onions but also comes with a nice bou-
quet of herbs. Enjoy it while watching the sun melt like honey on the water.
