VIERNES CULTURALES (CULTURAL FRIDAYS)
The Little Havana Arts District may not be Wynwood, but it does constitute an energetic
little strip of galleries and studios (concentrated on 8th St between SW 15th Ave & SW
17th Ave) that house some of the best Latin American art in Miami. Rather than pop into
each gallery, look around and feel pressure to buy, why not visit on the last Friday of each
month for Viernes Culturales ( www.viernesculturales.org ; h 7-11pm). No wine-sipping art
walk this; Cultural Fridays in Little Havana are like little carnival seasons, with music, old
men in guayaberas(Cuban dress shirts) crooning to the stars and more booty-shaking
than brie. Although there is also brie, and plenty of time to appreciate local art as all the
Little Havana galleries throw open their doors.

Colony Theater PERFORMING ARTS

The Colony is an absolute art-deco gem, with a classic marquee and Inca-style crenella-
tions, which looks like the sort of place gangsters would go to watch Hamlet . Built in
1935, this used to be the main cinema house in upper South Beach before it fell into disre-
pair in the mid-20th century. It was renovated and revived in 1976 and now boasts 465
seats and great acoustics. This treasure serves as a major venue for performing arts - from
comedy and occasional musicals to theatrical dramas, off-Broadway productions and ballet
- as well as hosting movie screenings and small film festivals.
