lishment like portico-style mirrors, dark-and-light room color schemes and a tangerine-
and-cream lobby with a citrus-bright vibe. The pool is smallish, but overlooks a lovely
stretch of the Atlantic Ocean.

The grand Fontainebleau opened in 1954, when it became a celeb-sunning spot. Numerous
renovations have added beachside cabanas, seven tennis courts, a grand ballroom, a shop-
ping mall and a fabulous swimming pool. The rooms are surprisingly bright and cheerful -
we expected more hard-edged attempts to be cool, but the sunny disposition of these
chambers is a welcome surprise.

This 1928 Mediterranean-style palace feels like an (Americanized) Tuscan villa, with a
honey-stone courtyard enclosing a sparkling pool, framed by palms, frescoed walls and
gleaming stone floors. The soothing, old-world rooms are set off by rich earth tones, and
staff are eager to please.
