mission $16; h 10am-6pm; c )
This museum, located between South Beach and downtown Miami, isn't exactly a mu-
seum. It feels more like an uberplayhouse, with areas for kids to practice all sorts of adult
activities - banking and food shopping, caring for pets, reporting scoops as a TV news an-
chor in a studio, and acting as a local cop or firefighter.
Matheson Hammock Park PARK
( GOOGLE MAP ; www.miamidade.gov/parks/parks/matheson_beach.asp ; 9610 Old Cutler Rd; per
car $5; h sunrise-sunset; pc )
This 100-acre county park is the city's oldest and one of its most scenic. It offers good
swimming for children in an enclosed tidal pool, lots of hungry raccoons, dense mangrove
swamps and (pretty rare) alligator-spotting.
Wings Over Miami MUSEUM

Plane-spotters will be delighted by this Kendall-Tamiami Executive Airport museum,
which chronicles the history of aviation. Highlights include a propeller collection, J47 jet
engine, a Soviet bomber from Smolensk and the nose section of a B-29 called Fertile
Myrtle, the same type of aircraft used to drop atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
An impressive exhibit on the Tuskegee Airmen features videos of the African American
pilots telling their own stories.
