FINDING ART IN WYNWOOD
At the time of writing, there are over 60 art galleries in Wynwood, with new spaces open-
ing on what sometimes feels like a weekly basis. The stomping grounds of 'Wypsters'
(Wynwood hipsters, those who enjoy, staff and provide content for the neighborhood's
galleries) shift month by month as 'guerilla' galleries, new murals, graffiti, cafes, restaur-
ants and studio spaces spread across Midtown. In general, art galleries can be found in a
square bound by NW 20th and NW 37th Sts to the south and north, and N Miami Ave and
NW 3rd Ave to the east and west. It's difficult for us to recommend one specific set of gal-
leries given the diversity of what's on offer, but the following are some of our favorites.
Artopia ( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; % 305-374-8882; www.artopiamiami.com ; 1753 NE 2nd Ave; h call
for hours) Proves the extents for Wynwood we mention above are flexible - Artopia is
physically in Overtown, but culturally part of the gallery circuit. This was the old studio
space of the late, renowned self-taught artist Purvis Young, who grew up near the studio.
His folk-arty works and similar pieces are often displayed, as are pieces by up-and-com-
ing artists, local or otherwise.
PanAmerican Art Projects ( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; % 305-573-2400; www.panamericanart.com ;
2450 NW 2nd Ave; h 9:30am-5:30pm Tue-Fri, noon-5:30pm Sat) Despite the name, PanAmeric-
an also showcases work from European and Chinese artists. But much of what is on dis-
play comes from fine artists representing Latin America, the Caribbean and the USA.
Brisky Gallery ( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; % 786-409-3585; www.briskygallery.com ; 130 NW 24th St;
h call for hours) Coming to Miami by way of its original location in Germany, Brisky boasts
an enormous 4500-sq-ft warehouse that houses a museum's worth of local and interna-
tional art. Need more creativity? Head outside to a 5000-sq-ft back lot filled with murals,
curated graffiti, art installations and sculpture.
There are literally dozens of other galleries to check out; a nice way of seeing them and
getting in some free wine and cheese is attending the famous Wynwood Art Walks , or if
you're around at the right time, the Art Wynwood festival. Check out websites such as
www.beachedmiami.com , wynwoodartwalk.com and www.miamiartguide.com for more
information.
