Maps refer to the area above South Beach as Miami Beach, but locals use the jargon Mid-
Beach (around the 40th streets) and North Beach (70th St and above). Communities like
Surfside, Bal Harbour, Sunny Isles and Aventura are further north and can be included in
spirit. Indian Creek waterway separates the luxury hotels and high-rise condos from the
residential districts in the west. Keep in mind that the separate city of North Miami Beach
(as opposed to the
region
of Northern Miami Beach) is not, technically, on the spit of land
known as Miami Beach - it's on the mainland. Confused? So are most residents.

What's trendy in beachwear this season? Seventeenth-century Polish gabardine coats, ap-
parently. There are plenty of skimpily dressed hotties on the Mid-Beach boardwalk, but
there are also Orthodox Jews going about their business in the midst of gay joggers,
strolling tourists and sunbathers. Nearby are numerous condo buildings occupied by
middle-class Latinos and Jews, who walk their dogs and play with their kids here, giving
the entire place a laid-back, real-world vibe that contrasts with the nonstop glamour of
South Beach.
