ing carbon. Part of their defence rested upon complicated calculations
of the amount of emissions saved by their occupation. The Kingsnorth
case brought the issue of cleaning up coal with CCS to public attention.
But before it could become clear whether Eon would volunteer to equip
Kingsnorth with CCS, or whether the UK government would require it,
Eon decided to drop the expansion of Kingsnorth, saying that it didn't see
sufficient market demand for the extra electricity.
In general, the cause of climate-change control - and at the heart of
it, pressure for low-carbon energy - has mobilized a very wide range of
NGOs to work together in the UK, as elsewhere in the world. Most of the
NGOs in the UK fall into three main categories:
Green groups with a broad concern about the environment and bio-
diversity. These include animal welfare groups such as the Royal Society
for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) and WWF (formerly the World
