route back to the US from the Yalta Conference.
Before the war, US companies had acquired oil stakes, alongside British
and French rivals, in Iraq and Kuwait. But the most important was the
sixty-year concession in Saudi Arabia that the Standard Oil Corporation
of California (Socal, which is today part of Chevron) bought in 1933.
