In-Depth Information
The Fontana Dam: a hydroelectric dam built on the Little Tennessee River. It
is operated by the Tennessee Valley Authority - an early US utilities provider
- which built the dam in the early 1940s to meet the skyrocketing electricity
demands in the Tennessee Valley at the height of World War II.
Moving in the opposite direction
Gradually the utility industry has become a more international business,
as barriers to cross-border energy investment and trading have been low-
ered, first within the European and US markets, and then among some
developing countries. This barrier-lowering process - which was known
as liberalization or deregulation and which often involved privatization
- was launched in the UK, other northern European countries and parts
of the US, as something that would boost efficiency and bring consumers
choice and lower prices.
