In-Depth Information
The old Inga dam, on the Congo river, is to be radically expanded and updated,
to rival, and possibly even surpass, the electricity output of China's Three
Gorges.
two new dams, the Grand Inga and Inga III. If the project is realized, the
dams could produce more than Three Gorges, and as much as one third
of Africa's entire electricity output.
Backers of the project say it would “light up” the dark heart of Africa.
Critics say it would do nothing of the kind, because most central Africans
are not on the grid, and much of the output would be lost in transmission
to distant customers.
