Not all of the UK is NIMBYish about onshore wind power: Scotland has
seen a boom in wind-generated electricity, as the above map shows.

Europe has taken the lead in offshore wind partly because it has a lot of
fairly shallow and windy water (up to 25m metres) around the margins
of the North Sea. For its part, the US has some shallow water with good
wind resources off its Atlantic coast. The Gulf of Mexico also has a lot of
shallow water, but it's unworkable as a location because the wind there
tends to come in hurricanes or not all.
