The Replaceability Argument is based on the Total View, which claims
that the potential welfare of contingent beings should count in moral
considerations. Contingent beings are beings that do not yet exist and
whose existence depends on the moral choice that is being contem-
plated. It is disputed whether the possible welfare of contingent beings
should be taken into account. The relevant controversy will be further
explored in the following chapter.
