Big Bear Lake
Big Bear Lake is a low-key and family-friendly mountain resort (elevation 6750ft) about
110 miles northeast of LA. Snowy winters lure scores of skiers and boarders to its two
mountains, while summers bring hikers, mountain bikers and water-sports enthusiasts
wishing to escape the stifling heat down in the basin. Even getting here is spectacular.
Blessed with hair-raising cliff drop-offs and postcard canyon views, the Rim of the World
Scenic Byway (Hwy 18) is one of America's great drives. We suggest diverging from the
trodden path early, and visiting the sculpted sandstone of Mormon Rocks . From there take
Hwy 138 past Silverwood Lake and Lake Gregory , then climb Hwy 18 into quaint Blue
Jay and Lake Arrowhead . This is where the vistas get serious and the hairpins exciting.
Lake Arrowhead's fashionable mall and ski resort makes a nice respite from the road.
