In-Depth Information
Royce Hall LIVE MUSIC
( GOOGLE MAP ; www.uclalive.org ; UCLA; tickets from $22)
An exceptional theater housed in UCLA's historic heart. The brick building reeks of acade-
mia, but UCLA Live has been known to bring in authors such as David Sedaris and
Anthony Bourdain for lively readings, and spectacular musicians like piano man Chick
Corea, and the Philip Glass ensemble.
El Rey LIVE MUSIC
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; www.theelrey.com ; 5515 Wilshire Blvd; cover varies)
An old art-deco dance hall decked out in red velvet and chandeliers and flaunting an awe-
some sound system with excellent sightlines. Although it can hold 800 people, it feels
quite small. Performance-wise, it's popular with indie acts, like Black Joe Lewis and the
Honeybears, and the rockers who love them.
Echo LIVE MUSIC
( GOOGLE MAP ; www.attheecho.com ; 1822 W Sunset Blvd; cover varies)
Eastsiders hungry for an eclectic alchemy of sounds pack this funky-town dive that's ba-
sically a sweaty bar with a stage and a smoking patio. It books indie bands, and also has
regular club nights. The Funky Sole party every Saturday is always a blast.
