kayaking tour of Santa Cruz or Anacapa (from $200 per person, two-person minimum).
CHANNEL CROSSINGS
The open seas on the boat ride out to the Channel Islands may feel choppy to landlub-
bers. To avoid seasickness, sit outside on the upper deck, away from the diesel fumes in
back. The outbound trip is typically against the wind and a bit bumpier than the return.
Over-the-counter motion-sickness pills (eg Dramamine) can make you drowsy. Staring at
the horizon may help. Boats usually brake when dolphins or whales are spotted - always
a welcome distraction from any nausea.
Sleeping
Each island has a primitive year-round campground ( reservations 877-444-6777;
www.recreation.gov ; tent sites $15) with pit toilets and picnic tables. Water is only available on
Santa Rosa and Santa Cruz Islands. You must pack everything in and out, including trash.
Due to fire danger, campfires aren't allowed, but enclosed, gas campstoves are OK. Ad-
vance reservations are required for all island campsites.
