Getting There & Away
From an unstaffed Amtrak ( 800-872-7245; www.amtrak.com ; 800 Pine St) station, daily
Coast Starlight trains head north to Salinas ($19, two hours) and Oakland ($30, 4¾ hours)
and south to Santa Barbara ($28, 4¼ hours) and LA ($41, 7½ hours). Several daily
Thruway buses link to more-frequent regional trains, including the Pacific Surfliner .
From the train station, Greyhound ( 800-231-2222; www.greyhound.com ; 800 Pine St)
runs a few daily buses along Hwy 101 south to Santa Barbara ($57, 2¾ hours) and LA
($81, six hours) and north to San Francisco ($74, six hours) via Santa Cruz ($57, 3¼
hours).
RTA ( 805-541-2228; www.slorta.org ) bus 9 travels between San Luis Obispo and Paso
Robles ($2.50, 70 minutes) hourly Monday to Friday, and a few times daily on weekends.
San Luis Obispo
Almost midway between LA and San Francisco, at the junction of Hwys 101 and 1, San
Luis Obispo is a popular overnight stop for road trippers. With no must-see attractions,
SLO might not seem to warrant much of your time. Even so, this low-key town has an en-
viably high quality of life - in fact, it has been named America's happiest city. CalPoly
university students inject a healthy dose of hubbub into the city's streets, bars and cafes
