OFF THE BEATEN TRACK
JAMES DEAN MEMORIAL
In Cholame, about 25 miles east of Paso Robles via Hwy 46, there's a memorial near the
spot where Rebel Without a Causestar James Dean fatally crashed his Porsche on
September 30, 1955, at the age of 24. Ironically, the actor had recently filmed a public-
safety campaign TV spot, in which he said, 'The road is no place to race your car. It's real
murder. Remember, drive safely. The life you save might be mine.' Look for the shiny
stainless-steel memorial wrapped around an oak tree outside the truck-stop Jack Ranch
Cafe, which has old photographs and movie-star memorabilia inside.
