Fremont Peak State Park PARK

Equipped with a 30in telescope, Fremont Peak's astronomical observatory
( www.fpoa.net ) is usually open to the public on many Saturday nights between April and
October, starting at 8pm or 8:30pm. Afternoon solar viewing happens monthly between
March and October. It's about 11 miles south of town.

Fremont Peak State Park Campground CAMPGROUND

A pretty, but primitive 25-site campground with vault toilets (no water) is shaded by oak
trees on a hilltop with distant views of Monterey Bay.
Eating
On 3rd St, you'll find a long line-up of Mexican American restaurants; none are especially
memorable.
San Juan Bakery BAKERY
(319 3rd St; snacks $2-4; usually 7am-5pm Wed-Mon)
Get there early for fresh loaves of cinnamon bread, hot-cross buns and guava or apricot
turnovers, as they often sell out.
Vertigo Coffee CAFE
( www.vertigocoffee.com ; 81 4th St; dishes $3-10; 7am-7pm Tue-Fri, from 8am Sat & Sun)
Rich espresso and pour-over brews, wood-fired pizzas and garden salads make this coffee
roaster's shop a find.
