Near the waterfront, this voluminous modern exhibition hall illuminates Monterey's salty
past, from early Spanish explorers to the roller-coaster-like rise and fall of the local
sardine industry that brought Cannery Row to life in the mid-20th century. Highlights in-
clude a ship-in-a-bottle collection and the historic Fresnel lens from Point Sur's lighthouse.

Built of sandstone in 1794, this graceful chapel is California's oldest continuously func-
tioning church and first stone building. The original 1770 mission church stood here be-
fore being moved to Carmel. As Monterey expanded under Mexican rule in the 1820s,
older buildings were gradually destroyed, leaving behind this National Historic Landmark
as the strongest reminder of the defeated Spanish colonial presence.
