These spotless and bright cabins with equipped kitchens and all the mod-cons are in a per-
fect mid-parks location - they're great if you're traveling in a group and the most comfy
choice even if you're not. Expect to see elk on the lawn in the mornings. Cabins sleep six
to eight people and there's an additional $45 cleaning fee.
Information
Unlike most national parks, there are no fees and no highway entrance stations at Red-
wood National Park, so it's imperative to pick up the free map at the park headquarters in
Crescent City or at the infomation center in Orick. Rangers here issue permits to visit Tall
Trees Grove and loan bear-proof containers for backpackers.
For in-depth redwood ecology, buy the excellent official park handbook. The Redwood
Parks Association ( www.redwoodparksassociation.org ) provides good information on its
website, including detailed descriptions of all the parks hikes.

Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park
Famous for some of the world's best virgin redwood groves and unspoiled coastline, this
14,000-acre section of Redwood National & State Parks has spectacular scenic drives and
70 miles of hiking trails, many of which are excellent for children. Pick up maps and in-
formation and sit by the river-rock fireplace at Prairie Creek Visitor Center (
707-464-6101; 9am-5pm Mar-Oct, 10am-4pm Nov-Feb; ) . Kids will love the taxidermy di-
oramas with push-button, light-up displays. Outside, elk roam grassy flats.
