White picket balconies stand in front of this sweet little downtown motel, which is family
owned and operated (you check in at the Red Front convenience store, right around the
corner). Spartan rooms are basic, clean and furnished simply, and the value is outstanding.

Turn west onto Van Ness St and go a few blocks for lawn camping with showers.
Hotel Ivanhoe HISTORIC HOTEL

Ferndale's oldest hostelry opened in 1875. It has four antique-laden rooms and an Old
West-style, 2nd-floor gallery, perfect for morning coffee. The adjoining saloon, with dark
wood and lots of brass, is an atmospheric place for a nightcap.

Shaw House, an emblematic 'butterfat palace,' was the first permanent structure in
Ferndale, completed by founding father Seth Shaw in 1866. Today, it's California's oldest
B&B, set back on extensive grounds. Original details remain, including painted wooden
ceilings. Most of the rooms have private entrances, and three have private balconies over a
large garden.
