Sleeping
Some of the in-town motels - and there seems to be about a hundred of them - are dumps,
so absolutely check out the room before checking in. Ask about Skunk Train packages.
There are a couple crowded, loud RV parks on the edges of town for only the most desper-
ate campers.
Old West Inn MOTEL
( 707-459-4201; www.theoldwestinn.com ; 1221 S Main St; r $79; )
The facade looks like a mock up of an Old West main street and each room has a theme
from the 'Stable' to the 'Barber Shop.' The decor is simple and comfy with just enough
imagination to make it interesting. Besides that this is the cleanest, friendliest and most
highly recommended place in town.
Jackson Demonstration State Forest CAMPGROUND
( 707-964-5674; campsites $15)
Campsites have barbecue pits and pit toilets, but no water. Get a permit from the on-site
host, or from a self-registration kiosk.
