In-Depth Information
Tucked into a neighborhood south of downtown, county workers love this chipper yellow
place for the fresh rotation of daily soups and sandwich specials (a recent visit on a
blazing-hot day found a heavenly, cold cucumber dill soup). The salads - like the pear,
walnut and blue cheese - are also fantastic, and there's a kid's menu.
Saucy PIZZA
(
707-462-7007; 108 W Satandley St; pizzas $11-19;
11:30am-9pm Mon-Thu, to 10pm Fri,
noon-10pm Sat)
Yes there are arty pizzas with toppings like Calabrian love sausage (really), fennel pollen
and almond basil pesto but there are also amazing soups, salads, pastas and starters -
Nana's meatballs are to die for and the 'kicking' minestrone lives up to its name. The small-
town ambience is slightly chic but boistrous at the same time.
Oco Time JAPANESE
( 707-462-2422; www.ocotime.com ; 111 W Church St; lunch mains $7-10, dinner mains $8-19;
11:15am-2:30pm Tue-Fri, 5:30-8:30pm Mon-Sat; )
Shoulder your way through the locals to get Ukiah's best sushi, noodle bowls and oco (a
delicious mess of seaweed, grilled cabbage, egg and noodles). The 'Peace Café' has a
great vibe, friendly staff and interesting special rolls. Downside? The place gets mobbed,
so reservations are a good idea.
Patrona NEW AMERICAN
( 707-462-9181; www.patronarestaurant.com ; 130 W Standley St; lunch mains $10-16, dinner mains
$15-34; 11am-9pm; )
Foodies flock to excellent Patrona for earthy, flavor-packed, seasonal and regional organic
cooking. The unfussy menu includes dishes like roasted chicken, brined-and-roasted pork
chops, housemade pasta and local wines. Make reservations and ask about the prix fixe.
Himalayan Cafe HIMALAYAN
( www.thehimalayancafe.com ; 1639 S State St; curries $15; )
South of downtown, find delicately spiced Nepalese cooking - tandoori breads and curries.
Some Sundays there's a Nepalese buffet at 4pm.
