Paul Bunyan Days CARNIVAL
( www.paulbunyandays.com )
Held on Labor Day weekend in September, celebrate California's logging history with a
logging show, square dancing, parade and fair.

Fort Bragg's lodging is cheaper than Mendocino's, but most of the motels along noisy
Hwy 1 don't have air-conditioning, so you'll hear traffic through your windows. Most
B&Bs do not have TVs and they all include breakfast. The usual chains abound. The best-

www.colombimotel.com ; 647 Oak St; 1-/2-bedroom units with kitchenette from $60/70;

Country Inn B&B
( 707-964-3737; www.beourguests.com ; 632 N Main St; r $80-220; )

excellent way to dodge the chain motels for a good-value stay. The lovely family hosts are
welcoming and easygoing, and can offer good local tips. Breakfast can be delivered to
your room and at night you can soak in a hot tub out back.
California Department of Forestry CAMPGROUND
( 707-964-5674; 802 N Main St; 8am-4:30pm Mon, to noon Tue-Thu)
Come here for maps, permits and camping information for the Jackson State Forest , east
of Fort Bragg, where camping is free - which attracts all sorts so this isn't recommended
for families or solo women.
Shoreline Cottages MOTEL, COTTAGE
(
707-964-2977; www.shoreline-cottage.com ; 18725 Shoreline Hwy, Fort Bragg; d $95-165;
)
Low-key, four-person rooms and cottages with kitchens surround a central, tree-filled
lawn. The family rooms are a good bargain, and suites feature modern artwork and clean
