Atop a hill with drop-dead views over the county, Iron Horse is known for Pinot Noir and
sparkling wines, which the White House often pours. The outdoor tasting room is refresh-
ingly unfussy; when you're done with your wine, pour it in the grass. Sunday noon to
4pm, April to October, they serve oysters ($3). Located off Hwy 116. Bottles cost $27 to
$85.
Marimar WINERY

Middle-of-nowhere Marimar specializes in all-organic Pinot - seven different kinds - and
Spanish varietals. The hacienda-style hilltop tasting room has a knockout vineyard-view
terrace, good for picnics. Also consider tapas-and-wine pairings ($45). Bottles are $29 to
$57.
Gary Farrell WINERY

High on a hilltop, overlooking the Russian River, Gary Farrell's tasting room sits perched
among second-growth redwoods. The elegant Chardonnay and long-finish Pinot, made by
a big-name winemaker, score high marks for consistency. Bottles are $32 to $60.
Porter Creek WINERY

Inside a vintage-1920s garage, Porter Creek's tasting bar is a former bowling-alley lane,
plunked atop barrels. Porter is old-school Northern California, an early pioneer in biody-
namic farming. High-acid, food-friendly Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are specialties, but
there's silky Zinfandel and other Burgundian- and Rhône-style wines, too. Check out the
aviary. Bottles cost $20 to $72 and tastings are free.
