Mendocino
Originally a 19th-century port built by New Englanders, Mendocino today belongs
to bohemians who would scoff at the puritanical virtues of early settlers, instead
favoring art and nature's outdoor temple for their modern religions. In summer, fra-
grant bursts of lavender and jasmine drift on fog-laden winds over the town's
unique redwood water towers, while at any time of year nothing restores the soul
like a ramble out onto the craggy headland cliffs here. Churning surf is never out
of earshot, and driftwood-littered beaches are potent reminders of the sea's
power.
