In-Depth Information
Amtrak does stop in Berkeley, but the shelter is not staffed and direct connections are few.
More convenient is the nearby Emeryville Amtrak station (
800-872-7245;
www.amtrak.com ; 5885 Horton St) , a few miles south.
To reach the Emeryville station from downtown Berkeley, take a Transbay F bus or ride
BART to the MacArthur station and then take the free Emery Go Round bus (Hollis route)
to Amtrak.
Getting Around
Public transportation, cycling and walking are the best options for getting around central
Berkeley.
BICYCLE
Cycling is a popular means of transportation, and safe and well-marked 'bicycle
boulevards' with signed distance information to landmarks make crosstown journeys very
easy. Just north of Berkeley, Wheels of Justice (
510-524-1094; www.wheelsofjustice.com ;
1554 Solano Ave, Albany;
11am-7pm Thu,10am-6pm Fri-Wed, to 5pm Sun) has 24-hour mountain-
bike rentals for $35.
BUS
AC Transit operates public buses in and around Berkeley, and UC Berkeley's Bear Trans-
it ( http://pt.berkeley.edu/around/beartransit ) runs a shuttle from the downtown BART station
to various points on campus ($1). From its stop at the Hearst Mining Circle, the H Line
runs along Centennial Dr to the higher parts of the campus.
CAR & MOTORCYCLE
Drivers should note that numerous barriers have been set up to prevent car traffic from tra-
versing residential streets at high speeds, so zigzagging is necessary in some neighbor-
hoods.
