In-Depth Information
Getting There & Away
West Marin Stagecoach ( 415-526-3239; www.marintransit.org/stage.html ) route 61 runs
daily minibuses ($2) from Marin City, and weekend and holiday services to the Sausalito
ferry. By car from San Francisco, it's nearly an hour's drive, though on weekends plan for
toe-tapping traffic delays.
Bolinas
For a town that is so famously unexcited about tourism, Bolinas offers some fairly tempt-
ing attractions for the visitor. Known as Jugville during the Gold Rush days, the sleepy
beachside community is home to writers, musicians and fisherfolk, and deliberately hard
to find. The highway department used to put signs up at the turnoff from Hwy 1; locals
kept taking them down, so the highway department finally gave up.
Sights & Activities
Point Blue Conservation Science BIRD OBSERVATORY
( 415-868-0655; www.pointblue.org )
Off Mesa Rd west of downtown and formerly known as the Point Reyes Bird Observatory,
its Palomarin Field Station has bird-banding and netting demonstrations, a visitors center
and nature trail. Banding demonstrations are held in the morning every Tuesday to Sunday
from May to late November, and on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday the rest of the year.
Bolinas Museum MUSEUM
