Mill Valley
Nestled under the redwoods at the base of Mt Tamalpais, tiny Mill Valley is one of the Bay
Area's most picturesque hamlets. Mill Valley was originally a logging town, its name
stemming from an 1830s sawmill - the first in the Bay Area to provide lumber. Though
the 1892 Mill Valley Lumber Company still greets motorists on Miller Ave, the town's a
vastly different place today, packed with wildly expensive homes, fancy cars and pricey
boutiques.
Mill Valley also served as the starting point for the scenic railway that carried visitors
up Mt Tamalpais. The tracks were removed in 1940, and today the Depot Bookstore &
Cafe occupies the space of the former station.

Old Mill Park PARK
( MAP GOOGLE MAP )
Several blocks west of downtown along Throckmorton Ave is Old Mill Park, perfect for a
picnic. Here you'll also find a replica of the town's namesake sawmill. Just past the bridge
at Old Mill Creek, the Dipsea Steps mark the start of the Dipsea Trail.
