. Now it's home to the civil rights advocacy group, where supporters con-
verge to sign petitions, shop for 'Equality' wedding rings, and admire the mural featuring
Milk's famous words: 'If a bullet should enter my brain, let that bullet shatter every closet
door.'
MISSION MURALS
Inspired by Diego Rivera's San Francisco Works Progress Administration (WPA) murals
and outraged by US foreign policy in Central America, Mission muralistasset out in the
1970s to transform the political landscape, one alley at a time. Today, 400-plus murals
line Mission streets, including:
10, 12, 27, 33, 48, 24th St Mission) Between Treat Ave and Harrison St, murals spanning
35 years transform garage doors into artistic and political statements, from an early me-
morial for El Salvador activist Archbishop Òscar Romero to a homage to the golden age of
Mexican cinema.
Mission, J) Only the strongest street art survives in Clarion, where lesser works are peed
on or painted over. Very few pieces survive for years, such as Megan Wilson's daisy-
covered Capitalism Is Over (If You Want It) or Jet Martinez' view of Clarion Alley within a
man standing in a forest.
St; ; 18th St, 16th St Mission) San Francisco's biggest mural is the 1994 Maes-
traPeace, a show of female strength painted by 90 muralistasthat hugs the Women's
Building. Featured icons range from ancient Mayan and Chinese goddesses to modern
trailblazers, including Nobel Prize-winner Rigoberta Menchu, poet Audre Lorde and artist
Georgia O'Keeffe.
