In-Depth Information
Welcome to kawaii (cuteness) - this 1968 mall is a vintage gem, with rock gardens,
wooden bridges and maneki-neko (waving cat) figurines atop sushi-bar counters. Lose
track of time in photo-sticker booths, karaoke lounges, ukiyo-e (woodblock print) galleries
and Japanese video-game arcades - then take a breather under the cherry trees by the
Peace Plaza pagoda.
Cottage Row STREET
( GOOGLE MAP ; off Bush St btwn Webster & Fillmore Sts; 2, 3, 22, 38)
Detour to the 1860s and 70s via this National Historic Landmark promenade formerly
known as 'Japan Street,' where Japanese Americans lived in clapboard cottages, farmed
tiny backyard plots and socialized under plum trees until their forced internment in WWII.
Forty-five years later, San Francisco's Japanese American Citizens League won a presiden-
tial apology for internees - and today, Cottage Row's public mini-park remains a point of
community pride.
