In-Depth Information
BUS
US-based Greyhound ( 800-231-2222; www.greyhound.com ) and Greyhound México (
01-800-710-8819; www.greyhound.com.mx ) have cooperative service, with direct buses
between Mexico and California.
Northbound buses from Mexico can take some time to cross the US border, since US im-
migration may insist on checking every person on board.
CAR & MOTORCYCLE
Unless you're planning an extended stay in Tijuana, driving across the Mexico border is
more trouble than it's worth. Instead take the trolley from San Diego or park your car on
the US side and walk across.
If you do decide to drive across, you must purchase Mexican car insurance either before-
hand or at the border crossing. Bring your vehicle's registration papers, US liability insur-
ance and driver's license.
If you're renting a car, RV or motorcycle in the USA, ask if the agency allows its vehicles
to be taken across the Mexican border - chances are it doesn't.
Occasionally the authorities of either country decide to search a vehicle thoroughly . Re-
main calm and be polite.
Bus
Greyhound is the major long-distance bus company, with routes across the USA, including
throughout California. It has cut services to many small towns; routes trace major highways
and may only stop at larger population centers.
