WORTH A TRIP
SAN DIEGO ZOO SAFARI PARK
Since the early 1960s, the San Diego Zoological Society has been developing this
1800-acre, open-range zoo ( 760-747-8702; www.sdzsafaripark.org ; 15500 San Pasqual Valley
Rd, Escondido; admission adult/child $45/36, two-day pass including San Diego Zoo $82/64; mid-
Jun-mid-Aug 9am-7pm, other hours vary seasonally; ) where herds of giraffes, zebras, rhinos
and other animals roam the open valley floor. For an instant safari feel, board the Africa
Tram ride, which tours you around the second-largest continent in under half an hour.
Elsewhere, animals are in enclosures so naturalistic it's as if the humans are guests,
and there's a petting krall and animal shows; pick up a map and schedule. Additional 'sa-
faris,' like zip-lining, a chance to observe a cheetah whizz by while chasing a mechanical
rabbit, and even sleepovers (yowza!) are available with reservations and additional pay-
ment (from $45).
The park's just north of Hwy 78, 5 miles east of I-15 from the Via Rancho Parkway exit.
Parking is $10. Plan on 45 minutes transit by car from San Diego, except in rush hour
when that figure can double. For bus information contact North San Diego County
Transit District (
619-233-3004, from North County 800-266-6883; www.gonctd.com ).
