All the big-name car-rental companies have desks at the airport, and lesser-known ones
may be cheaper. Shop around - prices vary widely, even from day to day within the same
company.
TAXI & RIDE SHARE
Plan on about $2.40 to start, plus $2.60 for each additional mile. Established companies in-
clude Orange Cab ( 619-223-5555; www.orangecabsandiego.com ) and Yellow Cab (
619-444-4444; www.driveu.com ) . Recently app-based ride-share companies such as Uber and
Sidecar have entered the market with lower fares.
TROLLEY
MTS trolleys operate on three main lines. Most useful for visitors, from the transit center
across from the Santa Fe Depot, Blue Line trolleys go south to San Ysidro (Mexico bor-
der) and north to Old Town Transit Center. The Green Line runs from Old Town east
through Mission Valley.
LA JOLLA & NORTH COUNTY COAST
Immaculately landscaped parks, white-sand coves, upscale boutiques, top restaurants, and
cliffs above deep, clear blue waters make it easy to understand why 'La Jolla' translates
from Spanish as 'the jewel' - say la- hoy -yah, if you please. The name may actually date
from Native Americans who inhabited the area from 10,000 years ago to the mid-19th cen-
tury, who called the place 'mut la hoya, la hoya' - the place of many caves. Whether your
interest is jewels or caves, you'll feel at home in this lovely enclave.
Northward from La Jolla, small beach towns extend like pearls on a strand. 'North
County,' as locals call it, begins with pretty Del Mar and continues through Encinitas and
