varieties.
North Park & Hillcrest
San Diego's restaurant scene is booming in these neighborhoods north of Downtown.
Bread & Cie BAKERY, CAFE
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; www.breadandcie.com ; 350 University Ave, Hillcrest; mains $6-11;
7am-7pm Mon-Fri, to 6pm Sat, 8am-6pm Sun; )
Aside from crafting some of San Diego's best breads (including anise and fig, kalamata
black olive and three-raisin), this wide-open bakery-deli makes fabulous sandwiches with
fillings such as curried-chicken salad and Black Forest ham. Boxed lunches cost $11.
Great pastries, too.
Urban Solace CALIFORNIAN
( 619-295-6464; www.urbansolace.net ; 3823 30th St, North Park; mains lunch $10-23, dinner
$17-27; 11:30am-10pm Mon-Thu, to 11pm Fri, 5-11pm Sat, 5-9pm Sun)
North Park's young hip gourmets revel in creative comfort food here: bluegrass burger;
'not your mama's' meatloaf of ground lamb, fig, pine nuts and feta; 'duckaroni' (mac 'n'
cheese with duck confit); and chicken and dumplings. The setting is surprisingly chill for
such great eats; maybe it's the cocktails like mojitos made with bourbon.
Waypoint Public GASTROPUB
( GOOGLE MAP ; 619-255-8778; www.waypointpublic.com ; 3794 30th St, North Park; mains $9-21;
4pm-1am Mon-Fri, from 10am Sat & Sun; )
The comfort-food menu at chef-driven Waypoint is meant to pair craft beers with its
dishes, which range from smoked tomato minestrone with grilled cheese to a burger with
mozzarella, pulled pork, tomatillo salsa, fried egg and spicy pickled vegetables. Glass gar-
age doors roll up to the outside, all the better for people-watching in busy North Park.
