Downtown San Diego was a rough place in the 19th century, full of saloons, gambling
joints, bordellos and opium dens. By the 1960s it had declined to a skid row of flophouses
and bars.
But thanks to strong bones and a local preservation and restoration movement, historic
buildings have been restored and collectively renamed the
Gaslamp Quarter
, now full of
restaurants, nightspots and theaters amid 19th-century-style street lamps, trees and brick
sidewalks. A few 'adult entertainment' shops, and a fair number of homeless folks serve as
reminders of the old days.
