SAN DIEGO IN...
It's easy to spend most of a week in San Diego, but if your time is limited, here's a whirl-
wind itinerary. Things will go more smoothly if you've got access to a car.
ONE DAY
Rub elbows with the locals over breakfast in the
Gaslamp Quarter
then ramble around
Old Town State Historic Park
for a bit of history before a Mexican lunch. Devote the after-
noon to the
San Diego Zoo
,
which is among the world's best, and if time permits visit
and a night out on the town, head to the hip
East Village
or back to the Gaslamp Quarter,
where many restaurants have terrace seating for people-watching, and the partying
ranges from posh to raucous.
TWO DAYS
Take the ferry to Coronado for a sea-view breakfast at the
Hotel del Coronado
, then enjoy
the California beach scene at
Mission and Pacific Beaches
.
La Jolla
beckons this after-
noon: explore
Torrey Pines State Reserve
,
Birch Aquarium at Scripps
, kayak the
sea
caves
, try a
glider ride
or head to
La Jolla Village
to browse the 1920s Spanish Revival
landmarks and boutiques. As the sun begins its descent over the ocean, head to
Del Mar
,
where you can cheer from, or snuggle at, one of the restaurants on the roof of
Del Mar
fades to black.
