Cross the Orange County line for old-fashioned Seal Beach , whose quaint main
street leads out to a wooden pier. Next up is party-animal Huntington Beach , which
legally owns the name 'Surf City, USA.' Don strappy sandals and Gucci sunglasses
for the white sands of the Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach , where yachties and
trophy wives mingle. Pause for a breath of fresh air and beachcombing at wild Crys-
tal Cove State Park . Further south, the artists' colony of Laguna Beach is another
movie-star beautiful hamlet you may never want to leave.
Easy does it along San Diego's North County Coast , where a colorful grab-bag of
beach towns jostle between Hwy 1 and the ocean. Keep rolling south to fancy-pants
La Jolla , a coastal village full of ritzy restaurants and boutiques, as well as gorgeous
coves and nature reserves.
In San Diego, hang with regular folks at Pacific Beach , ride the roller coaster at
Mission Beach or scarf down fish tacos and get a tattoo in bohemian Ocean Beach .
Snap a panoramic photo from Point Loma before finishing with a cocktail at the
swanky 'Hotel Del' in Coronado .
