Dana Point
Dana Point's built-up, parking-lotted harbor detracts from its charm, but it still gets lots of
visitors for its lovely beaches and port and for whale watching and sport fishing.
Trestles
World-renowned Trestles , southeast of Dana Point and next to San Diego County, is fam-
ous for its natural surf break, which consistently churns out perfect waves, even in sum-
mer. It's also endangered; surfers and environmentalists have for years been fighting the
extension of a nearby toll road that they contend would negatively affect the waves. Visit

Trestles lies inside protected San Onofre State Beach ( GOOGLE MAP ;
www.parks.ca.gov ; parking $15 per day) , which has rugged bluff-top walking trails, swimming
beaches and a developed inland campground ( 800-444-7275; www.reserveamerica.com ;

exit I-5 at Basilone Rd or Los Christianos Rd (for the campground), then hoof to Trestles
