The most thrilling part of the main festival, an experience that will leave you rubbing your
eyes in disbelief, is the Pageant of the Masters performance, where human models blend
seamlessly into re-creations of famous paintings. Tickets are hard to get unless you order
them more than six months in advance, but you may be able to snag last-minute cancella-
tions.
Sleeping
Most lodging in Laguna is on busy Pacific Coast Hwy (called Coast Hwy here), so expect
traffic noise; bring earplugs or ask for a room away from the road.

A bargain for Laguna, especially considering its convenient location just three long blocks
north of the village. It feels rather upscale, with plush bedding, beachy-keen decor and in-
spirational quotes painted into each room. Each room is different; some have kitchenettes.
Shared facilities include saltwater pool, barbecue grill and a fireplace for toasting marsh-
mallows. Pet fee $25 to $40.

Pride of place goes to this three-story white concrete hotel, at the north end of Main
Beach. Its 70 keen rooms were recently renovated with rattan furniture, blond woods,
marble, French blinds and thick featherbeds. Some have balconies overlooking the water.
Extras include DVD and CD players, bathrobes, beach gear to borrow and a nightly ocean-
view wine and beer reception.
