17.6 Conclusions
This chapter presents the main advances and challenges in modelling and
assessing performance of infrastructure networks in the context of risk-
based decision making. A systems approach was introduced to deal with
the computational complexity of managing infrastructure systems. The pro-
posed approach successively decomposes networks into clusters and con-
structs a hierarchical model of the network, extracting relevant properties
of their topology that are useful for simplifying assessment and optimiza-
tion of infrastructure networks. The hierarchical model responds to the
organizational scenario of decision-making problems in managing infra-
structure, i.e., people making decisions at different levels, about different
