Example 2
Determine the number of A. calcium atoms; B. nitrogen atoms;
and C. oxygen atoms, shown in the following: 6Ca(NO 3 ) 2
A.
Each formula unit of calcium nitrate contains one atom of
calcium. So, 6 formula units of calcium nitrate contain 6 × 1,
or 6 atoms of calcium.
B.
Each formula unit of calcium nitrate contains two atoms of
nitrogen. So, 6 formula units of calcium nitrate contain 6 × 2,
or 12 atoms of nitrogen.
C.
Each formula unit of calcium nitrate contains six atoms of
oxygen. So, 6 formula units of calcium nitrate contain 6 × 6,
or 36 atoms of oxygen.
