The volatile fraction changes one product to another. Fuels with a raised volatile
fraction can be quickly treated by vacuum extraction; those with a weak volatile
fraction will be more recalcitrant with treatment. Volatility extends from 90% for
gasoline to less than 10% for crude oil (see Table 15.6). Vacuum extraction can be
employed to treat other less volatile mixtures as part of a biological breakdown
strategy; this process is often called bioventing. The biological breakdown occurs
because the circulation of air provides the oxygen necessary for aerobic biological
breakdown.
