Over the past few years, however, a general permanent piezometric decrease has
been observed, with a maximum of 3 m per year. A continuously sampled well
allowed an accurate determination of the behavior of the aquifer in the cover, which
showed a permeability ranging from 1.12*10 -5 and 7.7*10 -6 m s -1 .

Two different vertical movements were observed in the Euganean hills area:
- the first was connected to geological factors (elevation of the alpine sector and
lowering of the Padana plain);
- the second related to aquifer exploitation.
The maximum settlement has been recorded in the town of Abano Terme (Figure
5.17), with an observed rate of several cm per year. In recent years a reduction in
subsidence rate has been recorded due to the use of a different exploitation
technique for the reservoir: pumping has been done principally from the calcareous
bedrock, not from the alluvial cover.
