species. The same is true for diversification studies of village homegardens, which
could have the additional benefit of creating more varied local food supplies and
prospects for livelihood development. Special attention is needed for the connectivity
of these forest-like habitats that may enhance dispersal possibilities for forest birds
and bats within a larger fringe along contiguous forests. Management options need
to be identified to enhance the species conservation value of these habitats and
increase and sustain forest-habitat connectivity.
Acknowledgments This research was undertaken within the framework of the Cagayan Valley
Program on Environment and Development (CVPED), a joint undertaking of the Institute of
Environmental Sciences (CML) at Leiden University in the Netherlands and Isabela State University
(ISU) in the Philippines. It was co-funded by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research
(NWO) grant no. R 84-612. The authors are grateful to ISU and CVPED staff for their kind assistance
and facilitation and to Sam Telan, Jessie Guerrero, Kennedy Baula, Arnold Macadangang and especially
Edmund Jose for assistance in fieldwork. Wil Tamis provided important comments to an earlier draft.
